Accessible Fashion as a Wheelchair User

Today’s guest post is from Lynley who runs Top Lady Talks.  Lynely was gifted some items from UK retailer Simply Be to style for a post around accessible fashion as a wheelchair user.

Finding Clothes as a Wheelchair User

A major problem I’ve had since becoming a wheelchair user is that I’ve struggled to find clothing that is comfortable and appropriate. I even wrote a blog post about having to buy new clothes as a lot of my existing stuff just didn’t seem to feel right.

So when I discovered that I had been chosen to have the opportunity to do a #gifted post with Simply Be, I was thrilled! It’s a clothing company that I have used many times in the past (being a ‘larger’ lady!) I love their clothes and I’ve bought quite a lot from them recently so I was excited to see what I could get.

I decided to try to buy a whole outfit with the limit I’d been given; not easy as the budget was around £50 but I decided to give it a go! After studying the range, I decided on their Indigo pull on slim leg jeggings, a Scarf print kimono and their Lucy side zip Tan boots.

I managed to come in on budget (well not too far off anyway!) and waited with excitement for them all to arrive. They came really quickly and it didn’t take long for me to realise that the items all went really well together. The colours blended perfectly and I had indeed, managed to get a whole outfit on budget!

The Scarf print kimono blouse was a great start; it tied at the waist with two string ties, it was floaty, it sat really well over the jeans and was in a very on-trend gold and black tile pattern. I teamed it with a simple black camisole which lengthened the body whilst covering any bumps below! It was so comfortable and would have been suitable for any occasion, a very versatile item indeed.

Finding trousers as a wheelchair user

As any wheelchair user would know, trying to find trousers that are comfy to wear is a difficult task so I was so glad that the jeans I chose were a success! The colour was great and the fit was a relaxed one. (You might want to size down) It has a high waist with an elasticated waistband which meant no digging in or lumpy belt loops or pockets in the way. The elastic was hidden beneath the blouse and combined with the slim leg fitting (which didn’t cling but wasn’t too wide either) it looked like any other pair of jeans.

The Lucy boots were gorgeous! The colour was dead on the ‘beige’ trend and the 2-inch heel wasn’t too high either. It meant that I could easily place my feet on my footplate and not have my knees pushed too far up, which I personally find quite painful.

All together, it made a really lovely outfit for a day or a night out; I could wear it as it is for a lunch out with the girls or I could dress it up with accessories, a statement necklace and some matching earrings for a night out.
